A platform for Asian-European collaboration through unique Knowledge Exchange Programme 1 – 4 July 2013

A platform for collaboration

An inaugural Knowledge Exchange Programme, Economic Prosperity through Enterprise Education, will take place between 1st and 4th July to provide a platform for debate and discussion to further energise the Entrepreneurial Sectors in both Malaysia and the UK.

We are proud to welcome Malaysian entrepreneurs, together with delegates representing the Malaysian enterprise education and enterprise policy sectors, for a four day tour which will provide us with an abundance of opportunities to share experience and best practice, and to establish a strong foundation for Asian-European collaboration in the future.

Looking ahead, next steps beyond the tour, have already been planned. A market visit to Malaysia has been arranged for North East businesses in November by UKTI (UK Trade & Investment); this will provide the opportunity to pursue further discussions with Malaysian colleagues where opportunities emerge during the tour.

New insights into entrepreneurship and enterprise

This targeted Knowledge Exchange Programme will be  hosted by ICE (International Consultants for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise) in partnership with Capital Corporate Communications (CCC) Malaysia.

The programme has been designed to offer new insights into entrepreneurship and enterprise and the challenges in implementation, through an extensive tour which encompasses the House of Lords, Westminster, Oxford and Durham Universities.

Almost 50 exemplar North East businesses and social enterprises are participating across the four days of the tour, originating from Durham, Teesside, Northumberland and Wearside. Each leg of the tour will also provide a wonderful opportunity for delegates to experience local food and hospitality, with meals in the North East being provided by businesses such as Gadds Durham, Café 21 Newcastle and Auckland Castle.

The unique programme has been enabled by Professor Allan Gibb OBE, The UK Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative (SFEDI), Gay Haskins, Oxford University, The North East Social Enterprise Partnership, and St Aidans College, Durham University.

Dato’ Hafsah Hashim will open the Tour

The first day of the tour will be spent in the House Lords, hosted by the All-party Parliamentary Group for Entrepreneurship (APPGE) . There is an evening event hosted by the APPGE and the Pink Shoe Club where award winning Entrepreneur Rebecca Howard of Cynergy will be leading a debate on Ethics and Values in Business.

We are delighted that Dato’ Hafsah Hashim (pictured right), CEO of SMECorp, will begin Day 1 of the tour by presenting Malaysia’s SME Masterplan. Its strategies seek not only to create wealth but deliver social justice and equity as well.  This is a powerful document and one worth sharing with governments and central planners across Asia and Europe.

Enabling economic development through enterprise

The Knowledge Exchange Programme will focus throughout on the three main “Enablers” of economic development: entrepreneurial Universities and Graduates; the Small and Medium Enterprise Sector; and Social Enterprises. It will also address some of the challenges of supporting enterprise education through policy.

All contributors to this very important tour are respected as experts in their particular fields. Opportunities for group discussion and individual meetings with subject specialists will add to its impact, with the aim of building a legacy of excellence for SME growth in both Asia and Europe .
